Production of Omni TanksTM, Advanced Carbon Fibre Composite Tanks for corrosive and high purity chemical transport, is set to increase dramatically, following the establishment of a mega-line in a new large-scale factory.
Omni Tanker, a manufacturing company with specialist expertise in tank container construction and developer of the revolutionary Omni TankTM composite materials technology, and McConaghy Boats, a world-leading builder of advanced composite yachts and multi-hulls, have established a joint venture (JV) to accelerate the production of specialised composite tank vessels and containers for the transportation of liquid dangerous goods. The JV is called Omni Composite Tank Ltd. (“OCT”) and based in Hong Kong.
OCT will utilise the high-end manufacturing and supply chain capabilities within the Greater Bay Area of Hong Kong and China. The new OCT factory is in Zhuhai, near McConaghy’s existing manufacturing facility. With additional support from Tiger Group, a co-owner of McConaghy and specialist maritime investment firm with expertise in ship owning, leasing and gas transportation, OCT is finalising its factory fit out and will begin production in the second half of 2025. Initial production capacity will begin at 200 tanks p.a., with a fully scaled capacity of 2500 tanks p.a.
The tanks produced by OCT will utilise the revolutionary Omni TankTM proprietary thermoplastic corrosion barrier technology, making them extremely resistant to dangerous chemicals and suitable for long term use in harsh environments. Typically, the tanks are used for transporting corrosive, toxic, oxidising, high purity, and pharmaceutical grade chemicals, with compatibility for a wide range of liquids, including food-grade products. The reason the Omni TankTM has such high chemical integrity is the Omni ShieldTM , a seamless thermoplastic interior, which results in a significant uplift in long- term durability without the need for relining, which is a massive advantage over conventional lined steel and fibreglass tanks. In addition, incorporating carbon fibre composite materials for the tank structure results in significant weight savings compared to traditional steel tanks, which translates to increased payload for intermodal freight transportation by road, rail and sea.
Daniel Rodgers, Joint Managing Director of OCT, and CEO of Omni Tanker, says: “With over 500 composite tanks already in service worldwide, Omni Tanker has a demonstrated track record in delivering its tanks as the equipment of choice for the transport of dangerous chemicals for the mining, water treatment and chemical process industries”. “We are excited to be partnering with McConaghy to expand production capacity andcontinue developing best-in-class solutions to transport dangerous and hazardous liquids”.
Joint Managing Director of OCT, and Managing Director and co-owner of McConaghy Boats, Mark Evans, said: “This partnership brings together Omni Tanker’s extensive knowledge and know-how in the composite tank space with McConaghy’s expertise in managing and executing series production using advanced carbon fibre composite materials. Our collaboration means that OCT can offer products and services to a global customer base”.
Technical Director of OCT, Dr Luke Djukic, adds: “The new factory will produce a mix of different products for the chemical transport market, including UN portable tanks, Swap Tanks and mini tanks. These products will be approved for service worldwide under multiple dangerous goods transport standards, including ADR (road), RID (rail), and most notably IMDG (deep sea), which was enabled following a global regulation change in 2022, when the IMO allowed for the approval of Fibre Reinforced Polymer UN Portable Tanks under the Code”.
Supported by a global sales organisation for EMEA, Omni Composite Tank Ltd. is poised to transform the global supply of advanced composite tanks. By combining cutting-edge materials technology with high-volume manufacturing capability, OCT will play a pivotal role in supporting the safe, efficient, and sustainable transport of hazardous and high- purity chemicals across the world.
